How Opta’s ladder works (the quick version)

Each club gets a rating based on recent results, the quality of their league, their country and even their continent. It means a blockbuster win in a big league punches harder than a stroll in a softer one. The outcome? A rolling, global pecking order that makes those pub debates a bit less shouty. 30–21: Big names, rebirths and reality checks

Lyon (30, 88.9) kick things off, spearheaded by Mason Greenwood and chasing Ligue 1’s top three. Roma (29, 89.0) and Fulham (28, 89.1) bookend Atalanta (27, 89.2) and a Crystal Palace (26, 89.3) side still feeling the hangover after last year’s highs.

Juventus (25, 89.6) are the headline act in this tranche — a far cry from the old swagger — while Everton (24, 89.8) have kicked on under David Moyes, and Porto (23, 89.9) smell a title back home. Napoli (22, 90.0) haven’t matched last season’s Conte-fuelled surge, and Bayer Leverkusen (21, 90.3) are regrouping after a rocky spell and a change in the dugout.

Snapshot list:
30 Lyon 88.9 | 29 Roma 89.0 | 28 Fulham 89.1 | 27 Atalanta 89.2 | 26 Crystal Palace 89.3 | 25 Juventus 89.6 | 24 Everton 89.8 | 23 Porto 89.9 | 22 Napoli 90.0 | 21 Bayer Leverkusen 90.3

20–11: Risers, dark horses and serial irritants

Benfica (20, 90.6) open the next block with Jose Mourinho grinding out results, while AC Milan (19, 90.7) look re-energised under Max Allegri. Bournemouth (18, 90.7) and Brentford (17, 91.0) are poster boys for smart coaching, with Andoni Iraola and Keith Andrews turning clever plans into points.

Dortmund (16, 91.3) wobbled after a sprightly start despite Jobe Bellingham’s buzz, and Brighton (15, 91.5) continue to outpunch their budget. Sporting CP (14, 91.8) haven’t skipped a beat post-Amorim, Newcastle United (13, 92.2) sit a shade high on sentiment, Atletico Madrid (12, 92.6) remain Europe’s grittiest awkward date, and Aston Villa (11, 92.7) look primed for a proper Champions League return under Unai Emery.

Snapshot list:
20 Benfica 90.6 | 19 AC Milan 90.7 | 18 Bournemouth 90.7 | 17 Brentford 91.0 | 16 Borussia Dortmund 91.3 | 15 Brighton 91.5 | 14 Sporting CP 91.8 | 13 Newcastle United 92.2 | 12 Atletico Madrid 92.6 | 11 Aston Villa 92.7

The Top 10: Cream rising

10) Manchester United (92.8) — Michael Carrick’s interim gig has turned into a statement. Slick, sharp, and finally coherent. Make it permanent? Hard to argue against it.

9) Chelsea (92.8) — Enzo Maresca steadied and stocked the trophy cabinet, Liam Rosenior inherits a squad that can dazzle one week and ditch points the next. The ceiling’s high; the floor still creaks.

8) Inter Milan (92.9) — Back-to-back Champions League finals on the CV, but last term’s drubbing and a European hiccup this season keep them honest. Domestically ruthless, continental questions linger.

7) Liverpool (94.5) — Arne Slot’s fast start won the title early last season; a winter dip this time dents the aura. The system’s sound, but the legs and depth need managing.

6) Manchester City (95.6) — Pep’s machine stuttered by his own sky-high standards. No silverware last term and a rare winless run, yet still sixth. That tells you how frightening their base level remains.

5) Real Madrid (95.9) — Xabi out, Arbeloa in, and somehow the juggernaut keeps rolling. Light on experience in the dugout, heavy on belief where it counts. Europe will judge them.

4) Paris Saint-Germain (95.9) — A historic quadruple set the tone; this season’s groove is less irresistible, but the talent density is absurd. When it clicks, it’s lights out.

3) Barcelona (97.1) — Hansi Flick’s structure, Lamine Yamal’s stardust. With Raphinha and Pedri humming, they’re purring atop La Liga and trending up in Europe.

2) Bayern Munich (98.3) — Vincent Kompany has them playing with a swagger that borders on inevitable. Kane the finisher, Diaz and Olise the mischief-makers. Europe beware.

1) Arsenal (100) — Arteta’s Gunners are finally marrying control with bite. Leading the league, in a domestic final, and dangerous in Europe — the full package at last. On current form, they deserve the crown.

Big picture: Is the Premier League still top dog?

England’s elite still dominate the conversation, but the spread here shows power pockets across Spain, Germany and France. The margin at the summit is razor-thin — one wobble and Arsenal can be reeled in by Bayern or a resurgent Barca, while City and Liverpool lurk like seasoned title thieves.
