Football never sits still, and neither should a top-30 list. This isn’t about nostalgia or name badges — it’s about who’s delivering right now and who’s doing it when the lights are brightest. Form, impact and silverware — not reputation — drive this ranking. If you’re sizing up a flutter while you read, have a look at our best betting sites.

30) Mohamed Salah — Liverpool and Egypt

There was a spell where a Saudi switch felt on the cards, but the Egyptian King stayed put and thundered through Arne Slot’s first full campaign. Over 50 goal contributions and a Golden Boot to draw level with Thierry Henry’s Premier League mark in 2024/25 — that’s serious output. This season has been patchier post-AFCON and, with his summer exit confirmed, Liverpool are clearly bracing for life after their talisman. Still, when he’s on-song, few can flip a game like Salah.

Honours snapshot: Premier League 2024/25; EFL Cup 2023/24; a raft of individual gongs across 2024–25 including Premier League Player of the Season and club Player of the Season.

29) Virgil van Dijk — Liverpool and Netherlands

He’s set the bar so high that anything short of imperious feels like a dip — but make no mistake, forwards still dread the sight of him. The EFL Cup final winner in extra time against Chelsea was a big reminder of his knack for the moment, and he captained Liverpool to the 2024/25 title before penning a new deal through 2027. Not quite peak VvD this term, but his leadership and aura remain colossal.

Honours snapshot: Premier League 2024/25; EFL Cup 2023/24; multiple PFA Team of the Year nods and back-to-back FIFPRO World XI selections.

28) Robert Lewandowski — Barcelona and Poland

At 37, Lewy has no interest in farewell tours. He spearheaded Hansi Flick’s treble-chasers with a monstrous 42-goal haul across competitions and is still clipping along this season with goals that matter. The penalty-box craft, the movement, the timing — defenders know what’s coming and still can’t live with it.

Honours snapshot: Spanish Super Cups in 2024/25 and 2025/26; Copa del Rey 2024/25; regular Team of the Season nods in La Liga.

27) Thibaut Courtois — Real Madrid and Belgium

The great big-game goalkeeper of his generation. Madrid keep stacking trophies and Courtois keeps getting his hands to the moments that decide them. Commanding in the area, outrageous reach, and a habit of shrinking the goal for elite strikers — that’s why he’s still the gold standard between the sticks.

Honours snapshot: La Liga and Champions League 2023/24; UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup in 2024; La Liga Team of the Season 2024/25.

26) Dominik Szoboszlai — Liverpool and Hungary

He helped drive Liverpool’s title surge with double-digit contributions from midfield in 2024/25, and he’s kicked on again even when shunted out of his sweet spot. The Hungarian fires from range, breaks lines, and has repeatedly been the Reds’ spark when the script went flat. Florian Wirtz may be the headline act on paper, but Szoboszlai has stolen scenes all season.

Honours snapshot: Premier League 2024/25.

25) Jamal Musiala — Bayern Munich and Germany

Don’t let the injury layoff at the Club World Cup cloud your view — Musiala is still box-office. He’s 22 going on untouchable, with velvet control and cold finishing, and he tore through last season with 21 goals. Now back fit, he’s already reminding the Bundesliga he hasn’t gone anywhere.

Honours snapshot: Bundesliga titles in 2024/25 and 2025/26; Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament and top scorer; multiple Bundesliga Team of the Season selections; Germany’s Player of the Year in 2024.

24) Bukayo Saka — Arsenal and England

Character? He’s got it in spades. From the Euro 2020 heartbreak to becoming Arsenal’s go-to outlet, Saka evolved into chief creator when Odegaard was sidelined and still carries a constant threat. The final-ball numbers have fluctuated lately, but when he’s in rhythm there aren’t many wide forwards more reliable for territory, tempo and decisive end product.

Honours snapshot: A personal surge without the trophies to match — yet.

23) Julián Álvarez — Atlético Madrid and Argentina

Atleti don’t throw around fees north of £80m for a laugh. Álvarez has justified every penny, stepping out of Haaland’s shadow and into centre stage in La Liga. Clever movement, tireless pressing, clinical finishes — the complete Simeone striker. He looks every inch a world-class No 9 in the making.

Honours snapshot: La Liga Team of the Season 2025.

22) Nuno Mendes — Paris Saint-Germain and Portugal

Silky on the ball and lightning across the turf, Mendes blends old-school defending with modern full-back swagger. With Hakimi tearing up the right, he’s often the balancing act on the left — less headline grabs, more platform-building — and PSG have hoovered up domestic titles and a historic treble with him integral to the structure. For Portugal, he locked down elite wingers on the way to Nations League glory.

Honours snapshot: Champions League 2024/25, Nations League 2025, multiple Ligue 1 and domestic cups, plus individual recognition in the UCL and Ligue 1 Teams of the Season — and the Nations League Finals’ top individual award.

21) Lionel Messi — Inter Miami and Argentina

No, he’s not the planet’s best anymore — the pace of the European game has new headliners — but Messi still toys with MLS defences and racks up videogame numbers. Twenty-nine goals and 16 assists in 28 league outings in 2025 tells you the magic’s very much alive. As Argentina eye another summer to remember, you’d be daft to rule out more Messi moments.

Honours snapshot: MLS Cup 2025 and Supporters’ Shield 2024 with Miami; Copa América 2023/24 with Argentina; back-to-back MLS MVP awards in 2024 and 2025.

That’s the first slice of the 2026 top 30. The theme? Big reputations still matter — but only when the numbers, the trophies and the eye test all sing from the same hymn sheet. On to the next ten…
