Carrick Under the Cosh: Why United May Need a Big Bruno Call at Leeds

Michael Carrick is starting to feel the heat, and there’s no hiding that now. Manchester United go to Elland Road needing a result against Leeds, and after a miserable start to the campaign, this is the sort of fixture that can either calm the noise or crank it up to eleven.

United have managed just two wins in nine games in all competitions this season, which is nowhere near good enough for a club of this size. The board are still backing Carrick for the moment, but let’s be honest — when results are this patchy, the alternatives begin getting whispered about very quickly.

Fabian Hurzeler is believed to be one option should United decide to act, with Jason Wilcox said to be keen on the Brighton boss. Christopher Vivell, meanwhile, is pushing Julian Nagelsmann, while Antonio Conte also has supporters on the board. Either way, the message is clear: Carrick needs to stop the slide, and soon.

There has also been another wobble off the pitch, with youngster JJ Gabriel seemingly close to walking away from the club despite being viewed as one of their brightest academy prospects for years. That only adds to the sense that things at United are not quite lining up as they should.

The problem for Carrick is not just managerial pressure — it is selection. And if he wants United to have any chance of matching Leeds’ intensity, then he may need to make a ruthless call and leave Bruno Fernandes out of the starting XI.

Fernandes’ numbers can still look tidy on paper — four goals and one assist in nine appearances — but that only tells half the story. All of those contributions came in two games, both against weaker opposition, and when United have really needed him to impose himself, he has often drifted in and out of matches.

Against Atletico Madrid, he did not look fully at it. He was used wide on the right, looked short of sharpness, and appeared frustrated before being taken off late on. That is not the sort of body language you want from your captain in a game of that importance.

Leeds, under Daniel Farke, are likely to line up in a 3-5-2, so this is not a match for passengers. It is going to demand running, aggression and discipline in midfield. If Kobbie Mainoo is unavailable, Carrick will need every bit of engine he can find, with Carlos Baleba expected to make his first Premier League start. The question then becomes whether Youri Tielemans or Andrey Santos partners him.

If Tielemans starts, United will need even more energy around him — and Fernandes does not naturally give you that sort of coverage when he is below full tilt. He remains a superb footballer, no question, but this side cannot afford to carry anyone, not even the captain, if he is not fully fit or fully on his game.

Dropping Fernandes would be a big, bold and frankly brutal decision. But sometimes the biggest calls are the ones that show a manager means business. If Carrick really wants the win at Leeds that United so desperately need, this may be the moment to swallow hard and make it.

For supporters, this is no time for sentiment. United need intensity, legs and a bit of backbone — and if that means a high-profile name makes way, so be it.
