Carrick’s Chelsea Test: Why De Ligt Must Come In Now

Michael Carrick has, for the time being, been spared the axe at Manchester United, but let’s not dress it up: he is walking into Stamford Bridge with his job very much on the line. After those ugly back-to-back defeats, the pressure is properly on, and there is no hiding place against a Chelsea side who are scoring freely and smelling blood.

United need a reaction, not another collapse. Carrick’s big challenge is to find a spine for a team that looks short on confidence and even shorter on control. That means making brave calls, because simply hoping for a better result is not a plan. This is the sort of fixture where managers either earn a few more weeks or start packing their bags.

One obvious decision is whether Bruno Fernandes comes straight back into the side. The captain was left out against Bournemouth after making waves with his comments, and the team that replaced him offered very little in return. Whatever you think of Bruno’s mood or manner, United have plainly missed his passing, his leadership and his ability to drag the side up the pitch. In a crisis, you usually want your best footballer on the grass, not watching from the dugout.

Then there is Matthijs de Ligt, the £38m man who surely deserves a start after finally getting minutes back under his belt. He may not have enjoyed the sort of comeback anyone would dream of, but he did enough in his return to show he still brings something United badly lack: composure, organisation and a bit of authority at the back.

With Lisandro Martinez having aired his frustrations and the younger centre-halves still not fully convincing, Carrick could do a lot worse than roll the dice on De Ligt at Chelsea. If United are going to stand up to a side averaging more than two league goals a game, they need experience and discipline, not another evening of defensive chaos.

The bigger picture is brutally simple. United are 16th, just two points above the bottom, and another defeat would leave the club hierarchy with an even harder decision to make. Carrick needs something solid, something sensible and, above all, something brave. best betting sites may love a gamble, but this one is about judgement: put your strongest defenders on the pitch and trust your proven men to steady the ship.

At this level, sentiment counts for nothing. If Carrick wants to survive, he has to pick players who can handle the heat. Fernandes and De Ligt look like the two most obvious levers to pull. Anything less, and United could be staring down the barrel of another miserable afternoon in west London.
