Carrick Under the Spotlight as United Face a Defining Week

Michael Carrick is staring down a proper pressure cooker this week, and Paul Merson has put it bluntly: the Manchester United boss is in trouble. With Atletico Madrid away in the Champions League followed by a trip to Leeds, it’s hard to argue this isn’t a brutal spell for any manager, never mind one already under the microscope.

United have managed just two wins in all competitions this season and, after being held to a 1-1 draw by ten-man Tottenham, they’re now winless in four. That sort of form at Old Trafford invites noise, and plenty of it. Once the results dip, the patience evaporates fast, and you can feel the temperature rising by the day.

There are already reports from Europe suggesting United have been sounding out Antonio Conte, with talk of an agreement moving closer if Carrick’s side fail to turn the corner. That tells you all you need to know: this is no longer just about one bad result, it’s about whether the club believe the project is going anywhere at all.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, Merson said he hopes Carrick avoids the sack, but made no secret of his doubts about whether he was ever the right appointment in the first place. And to be fair to Merson, that is the sort of question United have been wrestling with for years now: are they choosing proven winners, or hoping potential will do the job?

In Merson’s view, the club should have gone all-out for Unai Emery. He’s got the sort of heavyweight experience that can steady a dressing room and handle the chaos that comes with a club like United. Emery has not had things easy at Aston Villa this season after losing key players in the summer, but he remains one of the sharpest coaches around and is widely respected across the game.

That said, Emery only recently signed a new deal at Villa Park until 2029, so prising him away would be a tall order. Even so, the fact he is being spoken about in such glowing terms only underlines the point: United need someone with real authority, not just a decent run of form and a bit of goodwill from the fans.

For Carrick, though, the immediate issue is simpler. He needs a response, and he needs it quickly. Atletico away is as nasty a fixture as they come, and Leeds away is never a stroll, whatever shape either side is in. With Kobbie Mainoo unavailable, he’ll have to trust his squad and make sure the team show some steel. If not, this week could become the week that changes everything.
