Chelsea Stung at the Death as Sunderland Expose Soft Centre at Stamford Bridge

So much for a cruise into the new campaign. Chelsea, fresh off a trophy-laden 2025 under Enzo Maresca, were floored by a streetwise Sunderland side who pinched a 2-1 win in stoppage time at Stamford Bridge — and the fallout has zeroed in on Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo.

Early spark, late sting

Alejandro Garnacho looked every inch the new fan favourite when he tucked away his first Chelsea Premier League goal inside four minutes, marking the moment with a cheeky celebration by the hoardings. But the Blues let the visitors back in when Wilson Isidor levelled midway through the first half, and from there it became a knife-edge contest.

With time ebbing away, Sunderland found their moment. Brian Brobbey slipped a neat pass into Chemsdine Talbi, who curled calmly into the bottom-right corner in the 93rd minute, sending the away end into raptures and Stamford Bridge into stunned silence.

The clip Chelsea can’t escape

This one will be on analysis screens all week. Brobbey shielded the ball with ease in Chelsea’s defensive third, Adarabioyo couldn’t shift him, and Chalobah failed to track the runners. Talbi drifted free in the box and finished unmarked — a brutal snapshot of poor awareness and communication at the heart of the defence. It’s exactly the kind of lapse that turns three points into none, and the reaction online has been merciless, with many fans branding the pair costly and clamouring for changes.

Numbers paint a worrying picture

Chelsea hogged the ball and out-shot Sunderland 16-10, but control means nothing without game management. They’re eighth in the table and have now lost three of their last five league games. There was one bright note: Garnacho became Chelsea’s 10th different Premier League scorer this season (excluding own goals), and no side can claim more variety. Depth up front? Yes. Conviction at the back? Not yet.

Injuries and selection squeeze

Maresca’s options were thin. Benoit Badiashile was out, Malo Gusto was under the weather, Cole Palmer is edging back, and Liam Delap is nearing a return. The absence that really bites is Levi Colwill — his left-footed balance and leadership were missed in those fraught closing stages. Adarabioyo, signed on a free from Fulham in 2024, and Cobham graduate Chalobah were thrust together out of necessity, but the understanding wasn’t there when it mattered.

Credit to Sunderland as well. Regis Le Bris has them organised and opportunistic; summer recruit Brobbey from Ajax gave the Blues’ back line a rugged afternoon, and Talbi’s finish had ice in its veins.

What next for Maresca’s men?

This is where Maresca earns his corn. Chelsea must tidy their defensive distances, get a voice commanding the line, and stop allowing their box to become a free-for-all in added time. The schedule won’t wait: it’s Wolverhampton Wanderers in the League Cup next, a short hop to Tottenham in the league, then Qarabag in the Champions League. If the Blues truly fancy themselves as contenders on multiple fronts, the late-game lapses have to be stamped out — quickly.
