Derby Disarray: Thirteen Stars Doubtful as City and United Head to Etihad

Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad was always going to be a tasty slugfest — but neither Pep Guardiola nor Erik ten Hag will fancy the squad news they’ve been handed after an attritional international break. Between them, the clubs could be without as many as 13 players for the meeting, leaving both managers scratching their heads over selection.
Slow Starts and Stretched Squads
United have limped into the fixture after a stuttering start to the Premier League campaign, picking up just four points from their first three matches. Their first victory came in dramatic fashion – Bruno Fernandes coolly converting a late spot-kick to snatch a 3-2 win over Burnley – but injuries around that performance have left questions over who will be fit to finish the job at the Etihad.
City, meanwhile, have been uncharacteristically jittery, tasting defeat to Tottenham and Brighton after an opening-day 4-0 demolition of Wolves. Guardiola’s side have seen the international window do them few favours and now face a bout of enforced juggling across the pitch.
Man City: A Long List of Doubts
The biggest blow for City came courtesy of Omar Marmoush, who suffered a knee ligament issue while on Egypt duty and was pictured in crutches afterwards. He joins summer signing Rayan Cherki, who was sidelined before the break with a thigh problem that will keep him out for around two months.
On top of that, City are still missing the likes of Mateo Kovacic and Kalvin Phillips long-term, and the manager admitted Savinho and Phil Foden were unavailable for the trip to Brighton — although there’s hope they might be back in contention this weekend. Defensive options are thin too: Josko Gvardiol has yet to feature this season, Abdukodir Khusanov was taken off at Brighton with a minor knock, and John Stones pulled out of England duty with a muscle complaint, casting doubt over his availability.
United: Fewer, But Still Concerning, Absentees
Erik ten Hag’s medical list is shorter, but still significant. Lisandro Martinez remains a long-term absentee as he recovers from knee surgery, while Matheus Cunha and Mason Mount both picked up knocks against Burnley — Cunha in particular leaving early with a hamstring issue. Diogo Dalot also withdrew from Portugal’s squad with muscle discomfort, meaning United may be light at full-back.
Squad depth will be tested at both clubs. City’s injury carousel forces Guardiola into some clever rotation and pragmatism; United need to hope their key men recover quickly or that youngsters step up. This derby could end up being a tactical chess match influenced as much by who’s fit as by who’s in form.
Whichever way it goes, managers will have to decide whether to risk half-fit stars in a fixture that ignores caution. If you fancy having a punt on the outcome, check out the latest odds at betting sites, but don’t forget that derbies can be notoriously unpredictable when both sides are stretched.
One stat to keep in mind: City last lost two of their opening three league matches in the same season back in 2004/05 — a rare wobble that tells you this Manchester derby could be the defining moment of the early campaign for both sides.
