Palace pull the trigger: £48m green light for Strand Larsen as striker merry-go-round spins at Selhurst

Crystal Palace have gone big and bold. Sources indicate a £48m package has been accepted for Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Jorgen Strand Larsen, and it’s come just in time to plug a looming hole up front as Jean-Philippe Mateta angles for AC Milan.

That’s £43m up front with a further £5m in add-ons agreed — a real statement from Palace, and one that would set a new club-record outlay. For a side that’s been crying out for cutting edge, this is a proper swing of the bat before the window slams shut.

The deal and the numbers

After talks had appeared to stall, Palace returned to the table with a reduced proposal from the mooted £50m — and Wolves said yes. Strand Larsen, hailed as “phenomenal” by admirers, arrived at Molineux from Celta Vigo in 2024 and has posted 15 goals and five assists across 57 Premier League matches. This season’s been lean — one league strike in 22 — while Wolves sit rooted to the bottom after a 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth at the weekend.

Why Palace are going big

If all’s signed and sealed, Strand Larsen eclipses the fee paid for Brennan Johnson earlier this month to become Palace’s costliest buy. The Eagles have already added Evann Guessand on loan from Aston Villa and waved goodbye to former captain Marc Guehi, who moved to Manchester City. This, though, is the headline act — the sort of cheque that tells the dressing room and the league that Palace mean business.

Mateta on the move

Mateta’s situation explains the urgency. The Frenchman is pushing hard for Milan and isn’t in the squad to face Nottingham Forest as talks continue. He’s been Palace’s most reliable finisher over the last two-and-a-half seasons, rattling in 38 goals since the start of the 2023/24 campaign, but with a deal only running to 2026/27, the club are open to cashing in now. A like-for-like reshuffle feels nailed on.

What Strand Larsen brings

At 25, Strand Larsen ticks the profile Palace crave: physical presence, honest graft, tidy link play and enough penalty-box nous to turn half-chances into points when confidence flows. Yes, the current campaign has been a grind, but the underlying toolkit is obvious — movement across the line, aerial threat, and a willingness to occupy centre-halves all day. Selhurst Park can be jet fuel for strikers; he’ll fancy it.

Wolves’ end of the bargain

For Wolves, there’s logic. Results have sagged, the table makes for grim reading, and a sizeable fee offers room to reset before the deadline. Cashing in on an asset who’s struggled for goals this term could fund the recalibration they desperately need.

The late-window picture

Palace expect a straight striker swap vibe to define their window’s finish: Mateta out, Strand Larsen in. There have also been exploratory conversations about adding an experienced 31-year-old forward before Monday’s cut-off, should the right opportunity fall into place. Strap in — the final hours could be lively in SE25.
