Assist Row Erupts: KDB Says Bruno’s Record Isn’t The Real Deal

Best betting sites >> Blog >> News>> De Bruyne Disputes Fernandes Premier League Assist Record

Only in the Premier League could a record-breaker spark a fresh row the moment he makes history. Bruno Fernandes wrapped up the campaign with 21 assists for Manchester United, nudging past Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry on 20. A tidy line in the record books… except De Bruyne isn’t having it.

Bruno’s big finish – and the instant backlash

Fernandes has been crowned Player of the Season and now, officially, the league’s single-season assists king. Predictably, the plaudits rained in – and so did the dissent. Piers Morgan fumed, social media churned, and the age-old debate over what actually counts as an assist roared back into life.

KDB: “They nicked one off me”

De Bruyne, joint-record holder with Henry on 20 from 2019/20, says he should have stood alone years ago. He points to two moments against Arsenal that season. First, the away win where he danced through red shirts and squared for Raheem Sterling to tap in – a sequence he swears should’ve been logged as an assist but wasn’t.

Then there’s the home game: another pass towards Sterling that brushed David Luiz on the way through. That slight touch, the boffins ruled, scrubbed KDB’s name from the box score. The Belgian hasn’t forgotten; he even ribbed a league post at the time, insisting they’d undercounted him and cheekily adding, “9 plus 18 is 27.”

His gripe only grew when the Premier League later celebrated his 100th assist with a montage that, rather awkwardly, featured that very Arsenal clip front and centre. You can see why he feels the numbers don’t tell the whole story.

The 21st that’s got everyone arguing

As for Bruno’s magic 21, that came via a cross for Patrick Dorgu, who powered a header goalwards with Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen scrambling. Replays doing the rounds show the goalkeeper getting a touch before and after the ball clips the bar, and that’s where the hair-splitting begins. Was it always Dorgu’s goal? Would it have crossed the line without the final touch? The record only stands without controversy if the strike is clearly Dorgu’s and not an own goal scenario.

Here’s the rub: it’s fiendishly hard to prove the header wasn’t going in. Without undeniable evidence, the league won’t be rolling anything back. So, for now, the book says Bruno 21, KDB and Henry 20.

Numbers vs nuance

Assists are messy by nature – deflections, ricochets, and the odd goalmouth pinball make for grey areas. The Premier League’s definitions don’t always track with common sense, and there’s no VAR for creativity. De Bruyne’s grievance is understandable, but retrospective changes are as rare as a quiet transfer window at Old Trafford.

Where it leaves the great creators

Whatever side of the fence you’re on, the pantheon is glittering: Fernandes out in front this season, De Bruyne and Henry hallmarked at 20, with the likes of Mesut Özil, Cesc Fàbregas, Frank Lampard and Mo Salah all crowding the top end. If you’re hunting for the purest passer alive, there’s a strong case that KDB remains the eye-test champion, even if the ledger now favours Bruno.

And the debate will roll on…

Expect more slow-mo angles, more frame-by-frame forensic analysis, and more tribal skirmishes in the comments. Me? I love it. Records should be argued over – it means the football mattered. But until the rule-makers tidy up the grey bits, we’ll keep getting brilliant players left grumbling at the fine print.
