United’s JJ Gabriel Nightmare Deepens as Romano Tips 95% Exit

Manchester United have got enough on their plate without one of their brightest young talents seemingly heading for the door, but that is exactly where this is going. Fabrizio Romano reckons JJ Gabriel is now 95% likely to leave Old Trafford, with talks already taking place and the mood around the deal looking increasingly gloomy for United.

The timing could scarcely be worse. United are stumbling through a miserable spell, and the defeat to Atletico Madrid only sharpened the sense that this team is nowhere near where it needs to be. When results are poor, uncertainty spreads fast — and that is before you even get to the added headache of a teenage prospect pushing hard to move on.

Gabriel, who only turned 16 earlier this month, has reportedly asked for his registration to be cancelled after seeking more first-team opportunities. That tells you plenty about the situation: this is not a player quietly waiting his turn, this is a youngster who believes the pathway at United is not clear enough for him. And frankly, that sort of ambition will always attract top clubs from across Europe.

Romano says United still harbour hopes of changing the player’s mind, but he made it very plain that the odds are stacked against them. In his view, there is only a 2-5% chance of Gabriel staying, with La Liga now looking the most probable destination. Real Madrid and Barcelona, in particular, are said to remain active in their conversations with the player’s camp.

Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich had shown interest too, but those avenues appear to have cooled. That leaves the Spanish giants in pole position, and you’d have to say it makes sense if Gabriel is chasing a pathway that feels more immediate and more attractive. When Madrid or Barca come calling, players listen — that’s just the reality of the market.

For United, though, this is about more than one teenager. The club’s summer left obvious gaps, with no left-back and no striker arriving, and the squad has looked short in key areas ever since. Add in public friction from Lisandro Martinez and the stalled talks over Bruno Fernandes’ contract, and it all paints the picture of a club whose house is far from in order.

This is where the alarm bells really start ringing. When your biggest academy talent is reportedly desperate to leave, it speaks volumes about the current mood. United need stability, a convincing footballing project and a clear route for young players — otherwise, they will keep losing talent and wondering why the conveyor belt has ground to a halt.

If this one goes the way Romano suggests, it will be another brutal reminder that reputation alone does not keep players at a club anymore. Ambition, clarity and opportunity win out. United, at the moment, are struggling badly on all three fronts.
