Levy’s cheeky text twists the knife as Spurs splash £52m on Van Hecke

Only at Tottenham could a record outlay for a defender be upstaged by a text message. Word from talkSPORT is that Simon Jordan received a private ping from former Spurs chief Daniel Levy suggesting Brighton have, shall we say, made a tidy few quid out of North London’s latest defensive fix. The phrase used? That Spurs had their “pants pulled down” on the fee for Jan Paul van Hecke. Ouch.

De Zerbi’s rebuild is full throttle

Whatever you make of the price, Roberto De Zerbi isn’t messing about. Spurs have already snaffled Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi on frees to add savvy and steel at the back. Now Van Hecke, one of the Premier League’s quietly excellent stoppers last season, is set to join after a club-to-club agreement with Brighton.

And they’re not packing up the fax machine yet. Tottenham are pushing hard for a headline grabber in Sandro Tonali from Newcastle, with the Italian understood to be keen on a reunion with his compatriot in the capital. There’s a permanent move for Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich on the burner as well, plus an approach for Manchester City winger Savinho. De Zerbi wants legs, bite and a bit of stardust—he might just get the lot.

£52m for a year-left defender: folly or forward thinking?

Here’s the nub. Spurs have agreed a £52m fee with Brighton for Van Hecke despite the Dutchman entering the final 12 months of his deal. That’s the bit Levy’s message reportedly zeroed in on, and he’s not wrong to spot the leverage. But context matters: elite, Premier League-proven centre-halves in their prime don’t exactly queue up at the bargain bin.

Van Hecke is 26, aerially sound, reads the game, and crucially, he’s worked under De Zerbi before. For that money, you’re buying an instant starter to slot alongside Micky van de Ven, with Senesi strong depth and Robertson’s leadership down the flank. If the back line tightens up and the points stack, no one at the Lane will be counting the pennies.

Balancing the books and the narrative

Let’s be fair: snapping up Robertson and Senesi for nothing helps sugar the pill. Three defenders for just north of £50m overall is hardly financial lunacy in today’s market. Brighton, the game’s shrewdest sellers, were always going to drive a hard bargain. Spurs have paid the premium for readiness and familiarity with the manager’s demands.

What happens next

Midfield is the next battlefield. Tonali would add tempo and guile, while Palhinha brings the ferocity and ball-winning Spurs have craved. Savinho offers that direct threat out wide to keep full-backs honest. Get two of those three over the line and this window shifts from busy to transformational.

Pundit’s verdict

Levy’s quip will raise a smirk among rivals, but the only scoreboard that matters is the one in August. Pay a touch over the odds now, or pay with points later—Spurs have chosen the former. If Van Hecke shores things up as expected and De Zerbi lands at least one of Tonali or Palhinha, the joke won’t be on Tottenham for long.
