United Weigh Move for Bayern Speedster Alphonso Davies — But the Risks Are Real

Best betting sites >> Blog >> News>> Man United Alphonso Davies Interest Wages Injury Concerns

Manchester United aren’t just shopping for midfield muscle this summer — they’re sniffing around an elite left-sided option too, and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies is right near the top of the wishlist. The interest is genuine, per well-sourced reporter Christian Falk, but this one comes with more strings attached than a concert harp.

Why United are looking — and where Davies fits

United’s recruitment board want two new central midfielders, but they’re also eyeing a versatile left-sided player, a right-back and a striker if the numbers add up. Champions League qualification — and they’re on course, sitting third ahead of Friday night’s trip to Bournemouth with a top-five finish likely enough — would grease the wheels for multiple deals.

Davies, 25, ticks plenty of boxes: lightning quick, progressive on the ball, and capable of operating as a left-back, wing-back or even a winger. On paper, he gives United the sort of thrust down the flank they’ve lacked when injuries bite.

Falk: Interest is real — but the deal is a headache

According to Christian Falk, writing for CaughtOffside, it’s true United like Davies. They were in the conversation before he penned a fresh five-year contract at Bayern in February 2025 — leaving four years still to run. That length makes extraction tricky and expensive.

Bayern, though, have pondered alternatives because of Davies’ fitness record. Since the start of the 2024–25 season he’s missed 51 matches, most of them due to an ACL injury — a massive red flag for any buyer. Add his remuneration to the mix: around €20m a year including bonuses, roughly £330,000 per week, and you see the scale of the challenge.

The headline: United’s interest is legit, Bayern would at least listen given the injuries and the salary, but the contract length, fitness record and wage demands make this a complicated — and costly — pursuit.

The United dilemma: brilliance versus durability

Let’s have it right: on his day Davies is one of the best left-backs on the planet, with pace to burn and end product to match. But United already live with the will-he-won’t-he availability of Luke Shaw. Do you double down on another world-class talent with a medical file that thick?

There’s the wage bill, too. The club’s new structure isn’t designed for £330k-per-week full-backs. Any move would require Bayern to compromise on fee and Davies to come down on salary — or for United to offload smartly to make room.

Dimarco as an alternative profile

Inter’s Federico Dimarco has also been linked, and this is largely a stylistic fork in the road. Davies is a transition rocket — ideal if United want to play fast, attack space and stretch teams with a high line. Dimarco is a technician: elite delivery, clever underlaps, and a steady metronome in settled possession.

If the club were to lean into a possession-first coach — say Michael Carrick were appointed permanently — Dimarco’s crossing and patterns might mesh more naturally. If United fancy chaos and athletic punch right away, Davies moves the needle on day one.

Bottom line

This is a high-ceiling, high-risk punt. If Champions League cash lands, if Bayern soften their stance because of the injury ledger, and if the wage package is sensibly reworked, United have a shot. Otherwise, there may be better value in a slightly less explosive, more durable profile.
