Weekend Sacking Blocked? United Caught by Odd Market Rule

Manchester United’s miserable 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth has only piled more pressure on Michael Carrick, but there’s a quirky bit of red tape stopping the club from acting instantly. In other words, even when the mood at Old Trafford is toxic, there’s apparently a rules sheet to get through before the boot goes in.
The defeat left United without a win in eight matches in all competitions, and that sort of run is rarely forgiven for long at a club of this size. Carrick is looking more and more like a manager walking a tightrope, with talk already turning to who might come in next if the board finally decides enough is enough.
Why the decision has to wait
Here’s the odd bit: United cannot formally announce a sacking until they have informed the New York Stock Exchange, and that lot are shut at weekends. So while the hierarchy may well have spent the evening sharpening their pencils and weighing up their options, they can’t put anything out publicly until Monday at the earliest.
According to TalkSPORT, that’s exactly why no statement has emerged despite the atmosphere turning sour after another home defeat. There’s a pre-market session that opens at 10:30am UK time, with core trading running from 1:30pm to 8pm, which effectively gives the club a window to act once business is back on.
It’s a bizarre situation, really. In football terms, the feeling can turn on a sixpence, but if you’re a club listed in the United States, you can’t simply hit send on a press release whenever the panic sets in. United may already be lining up a successor, but the formal announcement has to wait for the markets to reopen.
So while Old Trafford supporters are left fuming and the speculation keeps mounting, the club are stuck in limbo for now. That won’t calm anyone down, of course — but it does explain why things have gone so quiet in M16.
