United Finally Have a Proper Shaw Plan — and Raum Fits the Bill

Manchester United have spent long enough pretending this left-back issue will sort itself out. It hasn’t, and now the alarm bells are ringing louder than ever. With Luke Shaw still battling fitness problems and the squad short on reliable cover, the club have finally homed in on a man who looks tailor-made for the job: David Raum.
This is exactly the kind of problem United have created for themselves — and exactly the kind of signing they now cannot afford to get wrong. When your only recognised senior option is a player who spends as much time in the treatment room as on the pitch, something has gone badly off-script.
United’s left side has been exposed
The mood around Old Trafford is already poisonous enough after a run of poor results, and the defeat to Como only turned up the heat. Michael Carrick has taken plenty of flak, Bruno Fernandes has effectively called out the tactical setup, and the whole thing feels like a club wobbling under its own weight.
But while the manager will always be the first name under the spotlight, this mess was building long before the recent collapse. Recruitment has been questionable, and the lack of proper depth at left-back and in attack has left United looking badly undercooked. For a club of this size, that’s simply not acceptable.
Raum makes sense on every level
According to reports, United have settled on RB Leipzig’s David Raum as their preferred target. And to be fair, it’s a decision that makes a lot of sense. Raum is 28, experienced, and has already built a strong body of work in the Bundesliga, with more than 100 league appearances and 40 Germany caps to his name.
He’s not just a steady pair of hands either. Raum likes to get forward, he gives you width, and he can operate with real aggression down the flank. That matters at United, where Shaw’s best qualities have always come from his ability to overlap and drive play on the left. Raum offers a similar profile, but with the bonus of being available now, not at some vague point in the future.
There’s also the contract situation. With his deal set to expire at the end of the season, Leipzig may have to do business before his value drops further. That puts United in a decent position if they move quickly — and frankly, they should. This is not a position for dithering.
In truth, if United are serious about stopping the rot, January needs to be about practicality rather than glamour. A sensible, proven full-back is worth far more than another headline-grabbing punt. Raum looks like the sort of signing that actually addresses a real problem, which, at Old Trafford these days, almost counts as a luxury.
