Newcastle’s Late Swoop for Frattesi: Close but No Cigar

Right, pull up a chair — Fabrizio Romano has lifted the lid on Newcastle’s late-window manoeuvres and it makes for gripping copy. The Magpies, having splashed out on Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa, also had their eye on Inter Milan’s Davide Frattesi as a serious second-choice target.

Romano’s Report: What Really Happened

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained Newcastle approached Frattesi’s camp during the summer to gauge interest. They had Ramsey at the top of their list and Ramsay’s deal — completed for up to £43m — was hard-won, but the club didn’t stop there. Multiple checks were made on Frattesi, and, as the window drew to a close, Newcastle even reopened talks after injuries to Joelinton and Sandro Tonali left Eddie Howe short in midfield.

Inter’s Stance and the Money Talk

Inter were never keen to let Frattesi go on the cheap. Romano made clear Milan’s neighbours would have considered a departure only for a very sizeable offer. In short: Newcastle explored the option, but Inter prioritised keeping their Italian international unless a really big bid arrived.

For context, Frattesi initially arrived at Inter on loan from Sassuolo and was made permanent the following summer. The 25-year-old has been productive—roughly 89 appearances with 15 goals and nine assists for the Nerazzurri—but interestingly he has not yet featured in Serie A this campaign, sitting on the bench for Inter’s opening matches behind the likes of Calhanoglu, Barella and Mkhitaryan.

Was Newcastle Right to Chase Him?

I like the logic. Newcastle have spent heavily this summer — around £250m on recruits such as Nick Woltemade, Anthony Elanga, Yoane Wissa, Ramsey, Aaron Ramsdale and Malick Thiaw — but depth in midfield was still a worry when injuries struck. Frattesi fits the profile of a combative, ball-carrying Italian who can press and arrive late in the box. If you believe the hype that tags him as ‘world-class’, he’d be a tidy coup.

That said, you can see why Newcastle didn’t force the issue. Ramsey was their priority and that move was delicate and expensive. Inter value Frattesi highly and, unless you are prepared to break the bank, prising him from San Siro was a tall order.

Small Margins and Big Windows

The closing days of a transfer window are often chaotic — medicals, panic calls, and six-hour negotiation marathons. Newcastle made the call; Inter stood firm; and, per Romano, Tonali’s injury that prompted the late enquiry turned out to be nothing serious. Football moves on, but the story is a reminder: even after one of the Premier League’s biggest spending summers, top clubs are still sniffing for improvement right up until the whistle.

If you want more inside scoops and round-the-clock transfer chatter, Fabrizio Romano’s updates remain essential listening — and if you’re feeling lucky on the next bits of deadline-day drama, have a glance at betting sites before you place a cheeky wager.
