Manchester United are weighing up a summer swoop for Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni — and the idea gets a big tick from someone who called it years ago: Ralf Rangnick.
United need a new midfield anchor with Casemiro set to leave on a free. Names from around the league have been floated — Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba — but Tchouameni is cut from a different cloth: 26, already decorated across Spain and Europe, a Nations League winner and a World Cup finalist with France. Rangnick saw it early
Journalist Andy Mitten revealed on the Talk of the Devils podcast that during his interim spell in 2021–22, Rangnick urged United to move for Tchouameni — one of several names he flagged alongside Enzo Fernández, Luis Díaz, Erling Haaland and Julián Álvarez. The German’s Old Trafford stint was forgettable, but his eye for a player holds up, and he’s long believed Tchouameni would thrive in the Premier League.
Would he fit United’s rebuild?
On the pitch, it makes sense. Tchouameni brings ball-winning bite, aerial dominance and the positional discipline to protect United’s back line, while offering crisp progression into midfield. Pair him with Kobbie Mainoo and you free Bruno Fernandes to do damage higher up.
