Ekitike Blow Caps Brutal Night as PSV Humble Liverpool 4-1 – Isak Now on the Clock

That was as chastening a European night as Anfield’s seen in years. PSV tore through Liverpool 4-1 and, to make matters worse, Hugo Ekitike hobbled off with a back problem. It’s nine defeats in 12 now for the Reds, and a third straight loss by three goals – the pressure on Arne Slot is turning from uncomfortable to untenable unless there’s a rapid response.

Ekitike knock and Slot’s verdict

Slot didn’t hide it afterwards: he sensed early in the second half that something wasn’t right with Ekitike. The Frenchman, he explained, had felt his back tighten up inside the opening ten minutes of the match and simply couldn’t move or press with his usual zip after the interval, prompting the change.

On the numbers, it was a frustrating outing for Ekitike: four attempts, two on target, only 30 touches in 61 minutes. A striker lives off moments, but his drought now stands at six matches without a goal since netting against former club Eintracht Frankfurt back in October.

Isak’s moment to stand up

Ekitike’s issue may prove minor or something that needs managing – we’ll know more in due course. Either way, this is the opening Alexander Isak has been waiting for. Liverpool’s record £125m man has yet to score in nine Premier League and Champions League appearances for the club, and while he did notch in September’s 2-1 EFL Cup win over Southampton, the league and Europe remain blank. Internationally, he’s four without a goal for Sweden since March. The platform is there now; he needs to plant a flag.

Selection headache before West Ham

The injury board is getting crowded. Ekitike joins a growing absentee list ahead of West Ham’s visit on Sunday. As it stands, Liverpool could be without as many as six players: Florian Wirtz, Conor Bradley, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni are all sidelined, while Alisson is under the weather.

What this says about Liverpool

Let’s have it right: conceding four at home and repeatedly getting done by three-goal margins screams of a side short on cohesion and confidence. The press was miles off once Ekitike’s mobility dropped, the midfield spacing looked ragged, and PSV picked their moments ruthlessly. Slot needs a cleaner structure and a quicker tempo in possession, or the Kop’s patience will fray even further.

West Ham won’t show up for a gallery tour; they’ll fancy their chances. Whether Ekitike makes it or not, Liverpool require a proper reaction: intensity without the ball, bravery with it, and someone – ideally Isak – to put their foot through the big moments. The margin for error has vanished.
