Spurs vs Brentford: Injury latest, selection headaches and when the XIs will drop

Two teams in need of a reset square off in the Premier League on Saturday as Tottenham host Brentford. One arrives on a sticky run without a win in five, salvaging a late 2-2 at Newcastle in midweek courtesy of their captain’s brace; the other has dropped three of the last five, including a midweek reverse at the Emirates. In short: this one matters, and it feels like a tone‑setter for December.

Tottenham team news

Spurs have been patching it up all season and that continues here, with at least half a dozen senior faces still unavailable. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski remain long-term knee absentees, while Dominic Solanke is edging towards a return after ankle surgery. Yves Bissouma (ankle), Kota Takai (thigh) and Radu Dragusin (knee) are yet to feature this campaign and there’s no clear timeline on any of that trio.

In his pre-match briefing, Frank hinted at rotation on the left flank, admitting nobody has fully nailed down that role with fixtures coming every three or four days. He also made it plain there’s no fresh update on Solanke or Kulusevski until they’re genuinely close to rejoining the group.

Tottenham injuries and suspensions — the snapshot

Maddison (knee, long-term); Kulusevski (knee, TBC); Solanke (ankle, nearing return); Bissouma (ankle, TBC); Takai (thigh, TBC); Dragusin (knee, TBC).

Separate to selection for this weekend, Tottenham are assessing a 24-year-old goalkeeper as a long-term option behind Guglielmo Vicario.

Brentford team news

After a mixed opening spell under Andrews, the Bees are hunting a response in N17. Igor Thiago was rested in midweek but, having come on, is expected to be back in from the start here. Fabio Carvalho is a long-term absentee after an ACL rupture, Antonio Milambo is also out for the season, and Josh DaSilva (knee) isn’t due back until the new year. There’s better news with Reiss Nelson and Aaron Hickey, who could both be available after missing the defeat to Arsenal.

Andrews sounded upbeat in his presser, stressing the group have kept things light since Wednesday given the recent workload, and that they’re in a decent place heading into Tottenham.

Brentford injuries and suspensions — the snapshot

Carvalho (knee/ACL, long-term); Milambo (knee, season); DaSilva (knee, early January 2026); Nelson (ineligible, could return); Hickey (knock, could return).

Confirmed line-ups

As ever, the XIs will land closer to kick-off — keep your eyes peeled in the build-up. We’ll update once the teamsheets drop.

Meanwhile, there’s background noise off the pitch: reports suggest Tottenham’s board are monitoring Thomas Frank’s position after recent results, per Fabrizio Romano.

Pundit’s view

Spurs need control at the base and clarity down their left — that’s the selection hinge Frank alluded to. If the hosts can tidy up transitions and get early ball into their front line, the crowd will go with them. Brentford, for their part, have to restore their edge out of possession and be ruthless on set plays; Igor Thiago is a willing runner and could be pivotal stretching the pitch. What to watch for

— The left-sided role for Spurs: who grabs it, and do they keep it for the festive run?

— Brentford’s intensity after a heavy week: front-foot pressing or a deeper block to conserve legs?

— Bench impact: with knocks everywhere, this could be decided by the freshest finisher.
