Fabregas shuts the door as United’s Carrick crisis deepens

Manchester United’s season has gone from shaky to outright ugly, and that 4-1 hammering at Como has only turned the heat up further on Michael Carrick. In football terms, this is the sort of night that leaves supporters staring into the middle distance, wondering how things unraveled so quickly.

United were second best from the opening whistle and never recovered, with the defeat exposing every weakness in the side. Nico Paz struck early after Diogo Dalot gave him far too much room, and once the game got away from United, the whole thing descended into damage limitation. Joshua Zirkzee’s late consolation did little more than soften the headline number.

There is now real pressure on Carrick, whose win rate has nosedived after a promising finish to last season. The numbers are brutal: 11 games, just two wins, and a win percentage that has collapsed to below 20 per cent. That is the sort of form that gets people at Old Trafford reaching for the phone.

Bruno Fernandes also looked visibly frustrated, and you could sense the irritation creeping in after he was hooked in the second half. When the captain starts looking exasperated, you know the mood in the dressing room is hardly bubbling over with confidence.

Fabregas is not for turning

Now, there may be a temptation among United fans to dream up a glamorous quick fix, and Cesc Fabregas would certainly fit that bill. But Fabrizio Romano has made it clear that the Como boss is not remotely tempted by the idea of swapping Northern Italy for Old Trafford.

Romano says Fabregas was admired by people inside United’s hierarchy, but the Spaniard is fully invested in the Como project and has no interest in walking away. Quite simply, he is building something he believes in, and he wants to take it further rather than jump ship at the first big invitation.

And fair enough, too. Como are not just a novelty story; they are a proper project with momentum, and Fabregas has been central to that rise. He guided them to a top-half finish after promotion, then pushed them all the way to fourth in the next campaign, sealing Champions League football. That is serious management, not a vanity act.

United, meanwhile, are left looking around for answers while the list of possible successors grows longer by the day. Antonio Conte, Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have all been mentioned, but the main point is this: Fabregas is not an option, because he is happy, committed and flourishing where he is.

So Carrick is expected to remain in the dugout for the Bournemouth visit, but he needs a response and he needs it fast. At a club like United, you can survive a wobble; what you cannot survive is the feeling that the whole place is drifting. Right now, that is exactly the concern.
