Keown Hints at a Shorter City Saga as Appeal Rumours Swirl

There’s another twist in the Manchester City financial case, and this one has come from an unlikely corner. Arsenal stalwart Martin Keown has claimed he’s hearing whispers that the club’s appeal over their guilty verdict could be sorted out in a matter of weeks — and that the final punishment may not be anywhere near as severe as many have been predicting.

The backdrop is well known by now. City were found guilty by an independent commission on 114 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons. The club have pushed back strongly, insisting they are innocent of the accusations and that they have “irrefutable evidence” to show the ruling is unsafe.

At this stage, the expectation is that the champions will be told what sanctions, if any, are coming before the current Premier League season finishes. A hefty points deduction is still being talked about, though the rumour mill suggests relegation to League Two is highly improbable, with the Championship viewed as the more realistic — though still extraordinary — worst-case scenario.

Keown’s claim adds fresh intrigue

Speaking on talkSPORT, Keown was surprisingly upbeat about City’s prospects. He said: “I’m hearing rumours this will all be over in a number of weeks. Six weeks or so, we’ll see what’s going to happen, and it won’t be nearly as bad as we think it might be.

“Maybe they get off with huge fines, and we return to the football pitch again.”

That’s the sort of comment that will set tongues wagging, because Keown didn’t say where the talk was coming from. Former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan quickly pointed out that such an outcome would only make sense if City were prepared to strike some kind of deal — and that would almost certainly mean accepting some level of guilt or responsibility.

And therein lies the problem. City are not likely to concede anything lightly, especially with so much at stake. In football terms, this is no ordinary disciplinary row; it’s a case that could alter the landscape of English football if the punishment lands heavily enough.

For now, though, the football itself keeps rolling. City have made a perfect start to the 2026-27 Premier League season under Enzo Maresca, winning all seven of their opening games. Whatever noise surrounds the tribunal, the squad have shown no sign of being rattled on the pitch — which, to be fair, is exactly what title-winning sides tend to do.

The schedule is relentless too. City face AEK at the Etihad in the Champions League on Tuesday, then travel to Aston Villa in the league on Saturday lunchtime. Four days later, they meet Brighton in the EFL Cup, with a place in the fifth round on the line.

So while the lawyers and executives do the waiting game, the players simply keep turning up and winning. That’s football for you: one world in the boardroom, another on the grass. For supporters, though, the uncertainty remains impossible to ignore — and until the final decision arrives, the whole saga will continue to hang over the club like a storm cloud.
