Maddison Sparkles as Spurs Scrape Past Coventry in Ugly Win

Tottenham have their first Premier League win of the season in the bag, but let’s not pretend this was a performance to get carried away with. A 3-1 home victory over Coventry City was built around a moment of genuine class from James Maddison, who looked like the one player capable of giving Spurs any real clarity in the final third.

This was far from a smooth night for Tottenham, and the scoreline flatters them a touch. Coventry had their moments early on, then hit back after the interval, and for spells Spurs looked every bit a side still searching for rhythm, control and confidence.

Maddison gives Spurs the shot in the arm they badly needed

The headline, though, is obvious. Maddison made his first start for over 500 days and promptly reminded everyone why Tottenham have missed him so much. His curling finish into the top corner was a superb strike — the sort of goal that lifts a crowd and settles a team in one swoop.

That goal came after Spurs had begun shakily, with Coventry asking questions right from the off. When Jack Rudoni levelled after the break, there was a familiar sense of nerves around the place, and Antonin Kinsky did himself no favours with a weak effort in goal. He has yet to convince as the long-term answer between the sticks, and this was another reminder that the position remains a worry.

Tottenham did at least show some backbone. They responded quickly, with Omar Marmoush rifling home from the edge of the area for his first goal at the club, and Ben Davies added the late gloss in stoppage time. But make no mistake: this was a night saved by flashes of quality rather than sustained excellence.

The ratings tell the story: one standout, several passengers

James Maddison was comfortably the best player on the pitch, earning the highest mark for his composure, vision and end product. Mohammed Kudus also impressed, constantly threatening down the right with pace and trickery, while Archie Gray put in a mature midfield performance full of energy and discipline.

There was plenty less to admire elsewhere. Dominic Solanke looked isolated and offered very little threat, Tosin appeared short of sharpness, and Jan Paul van Hecke was inconsistent. Micky van de Ven had some bright moments, especially with his recovery pace, but this wasn’t one of those commanding defensive displays you’d pin your hopes on.

And the substitutes? Well, they hardly improved matters. Conor Gallagher’s cameo did little to help Spurs keep control after Maddison went off, while Dejan Kulusevski’s return after 526 days out was the one feel-good moment among the changes. The crowd reaction to his comeback told its own story.

For Tottenham, the win matters, obviously. Three points is three points, and when a season starts awkwardly, you’ll take the result and move on. But if they think this performance answers all the questions, they’re dreaming. There’s still plenty of work to do, and they’ll need far more than one Maddison masterclass to steady the ship.
