Mainoo’s Masterclass Shows United the Way – Trust the Kids, Fix the Team

Kobbie Mainoo didn’t just play well against Sabah – he ran the show. In a Champions League win that never really looked in doubt, the teenager’s composure and authority in midfield screamed one thing loud and clear: Manchester United’s best fixes might already be in their own dressing room.

Mainoo the benchmark – again

Week after week he looks a cut above, and this was no different. Mainoo was, by any sensible measure, the standout performer on the pitch, the sort of metronome United have splashed fortunes trying to buy. Even pundits and journalists were unanimous, with Samuel Luckhurst hailing him as the game’s standout yet again. The academy graduate has muscled his way into being one of the first names on the teamsheet, and you can see why – balance, bravery, and a knack for picking the right pass under pressure.

He burst into the senior setup with that fearless display at Everton a few years back and, bar a sticky spell during Ruben Amorim’s tenure, he’s barely put a foot wrong. United fans love it because he’s one of their own – and because he looks like the real deal.

United’s academy conundrum

Here’s the rub: for all Mainoo’s rise, chances for other kids have been too scarce. The first-team group hasn’t exactly been teeming with homegrown regulars. Toby Collyer moved on in the summer, and even Harry Amass was at one stage talked about as being available. That should set alarm bells ringing. If your best midfielder is a homegrown lad, why are pathways being closed elsewhere?

United have two options: pour more resource into the youth setup or, perhaps more pertinently, give the youngsters proper opportunities. It’s not rocket science. The club once churned out Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes in quick succession; the blueprint is there if the will is there.

Left-back succession: Amass deserves a real look

Luke Shaw’s absence for the Champions League tie reopened the summer-long debate about left-back. Rather than lobbing another pile of cash at the position, maybe the long-term answer is already on the books. Amass got a rare run-out against Sabah with the game in hand – now let’s see a structured pathway, not a token cameo. If he’s good enough, he’s old enough, and you only find out by giving him minutes that matter.

It doesn’t help that United chased Lewis Hall from Newcastle in the last window while simultaneously entertaining talk of an Amass exit. Pick a lane: either you back the pathway or you block it. The smart money says you back it.

Transfer noise up top

There’s chatter that Benjamin Šeško could soon be pressing for a Manchester United start, which in turn could have a knock-on for Matheus Cunha’s involvement. Whether that scenario fully materialises or not, the broader point stands: if the club keep stacking short-term buys in front of emerging talent, they’ll stunt their own pipeline. And for supporters casting an eye over the odds and narratives before the next fixture, the best betting sites will be buzzing about which youngsters are truly in the manager’s plans.

Time to double down on youth

Calls that Michael Carrick should show more faith in youngsters capture the current mood around Old Trafford, but the message is universal whoever’s in the dugout: trust the kids. Keep them, coach them, and play them. The surest route to a stable, sustainable United is to solve problems in-house, not by flinging another fortune at a stopgap.

Mainoo is the standard-bearer. Follow that lead – identify the next one from the academy, give him responsibility, and stick with him. Do that, and the Red Devils won’t just win nights like Sabah – they’ll rediscover an identity that used to scare the life out of Europe.
