Man City fans fear key man has lost his edge after guilty verdict

There’s no getting away from it: the next few weeks are going to tell us plenty about the real fallout from Manchester City’s guilty verdict. The club have been found to have breached Premier League rules, and while they’ve appealed, the whole thing hangs over the place like a storm cloud.

On the pitch, though, City have carried on as if nothing’s happened. Seven league wins from seven is the sort of start that makes everyone else look ordinary. Liverpool have already been beaten, Ipswich have been seen off, and in pure results terms there’s been no obvious wobble.

But football always finds a crack if you look hard enough, and at the moment that crack appears to be one player’s form. The name being discussed is Marc Guehi, whose recent performances have been well below the standard City fans expect. Against Ipswich, he was punished for both goals and looked a long way from composed.

He slipped at a crucial moment for the first, allowing Daizen Maeda to burst through, and then gave away a penalty with what can only be described as a clumsy challenge for the second. In the Manchester Evening News, he was handed a miserable 4/10, with the verdict that it was “really poor” and his worst error since last season.

And that’s the point: this was not a one-off. Guehi also struggled in the Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain, where City’s back line was ripped apart and he certainly wasn’t covering himself in glory. Then there was England’s game against Spain, when a mistake from him helped set up Lamine Yamal’s early goal at Wembley.

Fans are starting to ask what’s gone wrong

Supporters have not been shy about saying what they think. Social media was full of frustration after the Ipswich match, with one fan saying Guehi had been “very poor” and had made two costly errors that led directly to goals. Another pointed out that his mistakes have been happening not just today, but all season, including for England.

That sort of reaction is predictable enough when a player is off form, but there is a separate theory doing the rounds too: some fans believe the guilty verdict has clearly affected him. Whether that’s fair or not is another matter, but the line from a section of the fanbase is simple enough — he has not looked the same since the announcement.

One supporter summed it up bluntly, saying Guehi had been “shocking” over the last month and calling it a “disaster class”. Another went further, claiming he has been rattled ever since the verdict came out.

Now, let’s be honest, footballers don’t usually get much sympathy when the errors pile up. Pressure is part of the job, especially at a club like City, where every slip is magnified. But if Guehi really is feeling the weight of events off the field, then this is exactly the sort of period that tests a player’s mentality.

For City, the bigger picture is still the same: keep winning, keep the noise outside the dressing room, and let the legal process run its course. Yet if one of their key men continues to wobble like this, the debate over whether the case is affecting performances will only grow louder.

And that’s where the real concern lies: the champions can survive headlines, but they can’t afford a defender losing his nerve when the margins are this tight. For more sports insight and discussion, visit betting sites.
