Amad Under Fire as United Fans Vent After Leeds Stalemate

Manchester United may have shown a bit more fight at Elland Road, but let’s be honest — that’ll count for very little if they keep coughing up points and leaving supporters in a grump. After a miserable run that already had the alarm bells ringing, Michael Carrick was probably relieved to see his side at least start with some purpose in the 1-1 draw with Leeds United.

Bryan Mbuemo gave United the lead in the 35th minute, and for a spell it looked as though the Red Devils might actually build something from it. There was more energy, more bite and, crucially, a bit of conviction — all things that have been in short supply for much of the season. But Leeds came back after the break through Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and from there United never really convinced they had enough about them to force the win.

For a club of United’s size, another patchy result only piles more pressure on a squad already looking short of answers. They’ve now won just two of their last 10 matches, which is hardly the sort of form that screams progress. The attack, despite all the money spent to sharpen it up, still looks oddly blunt, and the defensive lapses remain far too easy to spot.

Amad Left in the Firing Line

One player who caught the wrath of the United faithful was Amad. The winger struggled to make much of a mark in the final third, and while some fans have long seen him as a lively option, plenty of them were having none of it after this display. Social media was full of complaints about his impact, with supporters accusing him of being far too lightweight for this level.

That said, the numbers tell a slightly more balanced story. Amad completed 88 per cent of his passes, won four of his five tackles and came out on top in seven of his nine duels. So it wasn’t a total write-off in terms of effort or work rate. But football is a brutal business for attacking players, and if you’re not creating chances, beating defenders or testing the keeper, fans won’t be interested in the tidy stuff.

And that’s the heart of the problem. He lost the ball eight times, was caught offside twice, failed to hit the target with either effort and didn’t manage a single successful dribble. For a winger, that’s a damning enough line of work. When the final third is where you’re meant to make the difference, there’s nowhere to hide.

More Questions Than Answers

United’s hierarchy spent heavily to improve their forward line last summer, yet here they are again — a season later — still struggling to score with any real regularity. Seven Premier League sides have outscored them already, which rather tells its own story. You can dress it up as a point gained in a tough away fixture, but the reality is this is a team still searching for identity, rhythm and a reliable cutting edge.

And as if the attacking concerns weren’t enough, there were once again defensive frailties to chew over too, with Noussair Mazraoui’s costly mistake adding to the frustration. United may have shown more heart at Leeds, but heart alone doesn’t get you very far at this level. If Carrick wants this side taken seriously, he needs performances — not just effort — from far more players than he got on Sunday.
