Souness Sparks Fury With Brutal Dig At Arsenal’s Saka

Well, that stirred the pot nicely, didn’t it? Graeme Souness has never exactly been one to tiptoe around a controversial opinion, and on Piers Morgan’s live show he went straight for the jugular, taking aim at Bukayo Saka after Arsenal’s scrappy 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

The former Liverpool and Scotland skipper branded Saka a cheat, accusing the Arsenal forward of going down too easily and saying he “dives all over the place”. Morgan, predictably, was having none of it, and what followed was a proper on-air brawl of opinions between an Arsenal diehard and a man who has never been shy about telling the club what he thinks.

Souness: the old-school view versus the modern game

Souness argued that Saka is guilty of simulation whenever he senses danger, claiming the winger goes down the moment he feels he may lose the ball. His point was not just aimed at one player, either; he suggested Arsenal as a team are too quick to throw their arms up and try to influence the referee. In his eyes, that pressure can turn a strong official into a hesitant one.

That’s the old-school line, of course: stay on your feet, battle through contact and leave the theatrics at the stage door. But football has changed, and so has the interpretation of contact. Saka gets kicked from pillar to post most weeks, and defenders know exactly what they’re doing when they crowd him out.

Morgan kept pressing Souness to say outright whether he was calling Saka a cheat, and the Scot stood his ground. His argument was simple: simulation is cheating. He then broadened the rant to the wider state of the game, saying if you asked supporters what frustrates them most, plenty would point to simulation and VAR in equal measure.

Arsenal win, but the questions remain

As for Arsenal, the result was the important bit. They had to work hard against Forest, who made life awkward for them for long spells, before Noni Madueke found the breakthrough and the Gunners shut the door. It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective – and that has become a bit of a theme under Mikel Arteta.

There’s no doubt Arsenal are a seriously disciplined side. They boast the league’s best defence and have been among the most stubborn teams in the country for three seasons now. That’s admirable, but it also means the spotlight keeps swinging back to the lack of sparkle at the other end.

They’ve added firepower, with big-money forward Viktor Gyokeres brought in to sharpen the attack, yet the finishing has still looked uneven. Kai Havertz has not exactly set the place alight, and the burden on Saka remains obvious. Four goals in 10 matches across all competitions is a decent return, but Arsenal need more than decent if they are serious about staying with Manchester City.

And that’s the crux of it: are Arsenal too cautious, or simply not getting enough support in the final third? Either way, if the goals don’t start flowing more freely, they’ll keep inviting this sort of debate. For all their steel and structure, title races are still won by teams who can turn dominance into goals – not just possession and complaints from the opposition.
