Sesko Blow Leaves United Scrambling as Carrick Faces Chelsea Test

Manchester United have been hit with yet another setback, and frankly, this one lands at the worst possible time. With pressure already building around Michael Carrick after a miserable run of results, the club have now learned that Benjamin Sesko will not be back until the new year.
That is a major headache for United. Sesko has managed only six appearances in all competitions this season and has not featured since the derby defeat to Manchester City on 13 September. He has been nursing a shin problem ever since, and while the club have been working with a therapist to get him right, the latest update is hardly what the Old Trafford faithful wanted to hear.
United running out of options up front
The bigger issue is not just Sesko’s absence, but the thinness of the squad around him. United have won only one of their first eight Premier League matches, and they head to Stamford Bridge this weekend knowing another slip-up could turn the screw even tighter on Carrick.
And that is where the summer transfer business comes under the microscope. United failed to bring in proper cover at left-back for Luke Shaw, while Patrick Dorgu, who might have offered support, is currently injured himself. Up top, the planning looks just as shaky. They did not add enough depth, and now they are paying for it.
At present, Carrick is left to patch things together with Joshua Zirkzee, who has yet to convince since arriving in summer 2024, and Matheus Cunha, who is still not quite looking like a natural lone centre-forward. Bryan Mbeumo is also likely to be asked to shoulder more responsibility in the coming weeks.
When Carrick last spoke about Sesko’s issue, he admitted the picture was still unclear, saying the injury was in a similar area to a previous shin problem but not exactly the same thing. Well, the fog has now cleared, and the answer is simple: United must soldier on without their striker.
So the immediate challenge is obvious. Get through the next spell, stay in touch, and hope Sesko returns sharp in January. But if you’re United, you would be mad not to be thinking about reinforcements as well. A team in this sort of form cannot keep living on fumes.
