Wilcox Could Pay the Price if Carrick Is Shown the Door

Manchester United are wobbling again, and when the wheels come off at Old Trafford, the fallout never stops at the dugout. Michael Carrick is under serious pressure after a rotten run of just two wins in 12 matches, but the awkward twist is that technical director Jason Wilcox could also be swept out if the manager goes.

The mood around the club is grim. Heavy defeats to Como and Bournemouth have only deepened the crisis, and for a side of United’s size, an eight-game winless streak is bordering on scandalous. The decision to keep Carrick in place for now, with Chelsea up next, has bought a little time — but not much. This is the sort of club where patience is always measured in days, not months.

The BBC’s line is that if Carrick is dismissed, Wilcox is widely expected to follow him. That tells you plenty about how the hierarchy are viewing this mess. Three managerial changes in three seasons is hardly a badge of honour, and if the football keeps sliding, the people above the manager will not be able to hide behind the usual excuses for much longer.

There is some sympathy for Wilcox because he does not control the transfer budgets, and that is fair enough. But in elite football, sympathy rarely keeps you in a job. If the football department is judged to be failing, then someone has to carry the can, and Wilcox is plainly in the firing line.

Omar Berrada is not necessarily immune either, which speaks volumes about the scale of the uncertainty. Sir Jim Ratcliffe may yet decide that the only way to steady the ship is a wider shake-up of the senior leadership. And frankly, given the state of things, a reset would be hard to argue against.

United’s problems are not just about one manager; they run far deeper than that. The squad is badly underperforming, yes, but the structure above it has been a mess for years. The Glazers left behind a club that has been allowed to drift, and INEOS arrived promising a “best in class” operation. So far, that has looked more like slogan than substance.

The fans have made their feelings crystal clear: they want proper change, preferably at ownership level, though that remains a distant hope. For now, the best they can reasonably expect is a clean-out upstairs and a team that stops playing like strangers. United face Chelsea, Roma and Aston Villa before the international break, and if results do not improve fast, the review will come knocking again — and it may be brutal.

Old Trafford needs answers, not excuses

There is no escaping it: this club needs a total reset. Not just a new voice in the dressing room, but proper accountability all the way through the hierarchy. At the moment, United look like a side and an organisation running on fumes, and that is no way to operate at a club of this stature.
